before you decide which SEO company you want to deal with, let me show you a few tricks used by some of them to rip you off.
Please read this short letter carefully as I will provide you with valuable tips for choosing the right search engine optimization company and get the best results for your investment.

note: the examples are taken from some of the top results for the term "search engine optimization".

1) the truth about search engine submission:

I see services charging from 30 to 50 $ for a single URL submission to thousands of search engines. Here´s what one of them says:
"We can submit your website to more than 75,000 search engines, directories and links pages."
1 URL Submission - $24.95

Fact is that there´s only about half a dozen of important directories and search engines and it costs nothing to submit your site to these. Heck - you don´t even have to submit your site to one single SE as they are automatically searching the web for new sites.

The only thing you get from this mass submission is a huge amount of junkmail from the owners of the smaller search engines and directories.

Now this is even worse: the same company offers to submit your site every month:
1 URL Submission - Monthly for 1 Year - $189.95 !!

There´s absolutely no need for more than one submission - a complete waste of money ! It won´t get your website penalized like some people try to make you believe, but it also doesn´t give you any benefit.
my recommendation: RUN away from companies offering mass SE submission.

2) the truth about guaranteed listings:

Now this is a really weird guarantee. "Listing" means that your site is listed somewhere within the search results, but where ? You won´t get a lot of business when your web pages are buried under thousands or millions of search results.
Your site must be on the first page, i.e. within the top 10.
A serious search engine optimization company won´t offer you "guaranteed listings", so stay away from services offering this kind of guarantee.

3) the truth about guaranteed top 10 rankings:

Basically, what you need and want is your website ranking within the top 10 results for keyphrases related to your website.
That´s where it gets a little bit tricky to distinguish the top companies from the medium or low quality (although ethical) services.

Let´s take a closer look at some results of two companies, used by them to prove that their service is great. One of them claims:
"We guarantee:
your site will appear in the first page of Google search results within 90 days of being published for the single keyword it is search engine optimized for."

keyphrases they use as success examples:
reciprocal link software
t1 competition
vodka drinks

I conducted a time consuming in-depth research on those keyphrases to find out how many people searched for them in the last 60 days and how many competing web pages there are on Google (i.e. direct competitors = # of results when searching the phrases with quotation marks).
This is what I found:

keyphrase competing pages # of searches (last 60 days)
reciprocal link software 455 none
t1 competition 55 none
vodka drinks 2950 166

Another company listed the following success examples (i.e. keyphrases for which they achieved top 3 rankings) as proof of their good service:

alaska adventure travel
free christian pages
plasma welding
clinical equipment maintenance management
life insurance leads for agents
long term insurance quotes

Again, my in-depth research uncovered these results:

keyphrase competing pages # of searches (last 60 days)
clinical equipment maintenance management 122 none
free christian pages 6 27
long term insurance quotes 3400 40
alaska adventure travel 6390 15
life insurance leads for agents 37000 7
plasma welding 4700 18

note: for my research I used the probably most accurate keyword research tool: Wordtracker, the SEO experts´ #1 tool for choosing the right keywords.

As you can see, most of the keyphrases are uncompetitive and unpopular.

Here´s an example for you to see how easy it is to optimize web pages and get top rankings for medium competitive keywords fast:

By november 2003 I´ve still been a complete SEO novice. I had no clue at all how to optimize web pages for top rankings. Yet, when a friend of mine told me how to do it I decided to give it a try.
