issue #7 - March 2004 - 5 ways to increase your business credibility

Dear Colleague,

first of all Iīd like to welcome all new subscribers. Remember that this is your newsletter, so if you want to have a special marketing topic covered here or need any kind of help, you just need to let me know and Iīll do my best to help you.

In this monthīs edition of TheJungleMarketerīs internet marketing ezine Iīll give you 5 tips how you can increase your business credibility and finally discuss the results of my latest seo experiment.

When searching the net for potential link partners I often notice some very common mistakes many online business owners still make on their web sites, thus hurting their credibility.

1) contact information.

It seems some people try to do business online anonymously. If you want people to buy anthing from you or just subscribe to your list, then youīd better put your full contact information ( mailing address AND phone number ) on your web site. People want to know whom they are dealing with.

2) name(s)

On my search for new link partners and joint venture partners I often come across web sites that have at least their mailing addresses and a contact email posted, but thatīs not enough. I mean, when I want to contact someone, Iīd like to know at least the first name so I can personalize my emails and talk to a real person instead of saying: dear "company name" or dear "webmaster".

And the other advantage of having your name on your website is that you know when someone who tries to contact you to offer a business partnership did their proper research. I get these emails saying "Iīm trying to contact the owner of thejunglemarketer.com". Try again, dude. If you had only looked once at my homepage youīd know who I am.

3) testimonials

If you are selling products or even have only a newsletter, testimonials are a very important factor in inreasing your credibility. Try to get as much as possible, at least a dozen or so. Sometimes you get them automatically by just delivering a great service but often people are so busy that they forget to thank you for it, so you should remind them to do so or even offer them a gift.

4) answering your emails

You should answer your emails as fast as possible, within 24 hours. By doing so youīll give your business partners the confidence that you / your company is working fine and caring well about your partners. Even if you are not interested in an offer (f.ex. link exchange request or joint venture), then you should decline politely.

5) business seals and awards

I personally donīt like awards very much, because they are overused and also the main purpose of most of them is to build a list of web site owners. Everybody can throw up an award graphic and invite website owners to join a mailing list in order to win that award.

But a really good way to show youīre doing serious business online is to apply for certain quality seals like the BBB (better business bureau) and iCop (international Council of online professionals).

These seals stand for high standards and ethics in business practices and only web sites who comply with those practices are allowed to display these seals.

SEO experiment update

Finally I got sick of waiting a whole month for Google to update my site, so I decided to apply to the Adsense program. The next day I could see the updated results already and my new pages listed, too.

Letīs recap what the experiment was about: in order to increase the respond to your link exchange requests, the pages on which you link to other sites should have a good PR. Otherwise it wouldnīt give much benefits for your potential link partners.

If you have only one link page, then itīs pretty easy for you. Just link to it from every page you have. But if you want to have many link partners, you should build a directory in order to keep your pages better content targeted (by putting your links in specific categories) and not exceed 50 links per page.

Well - as I already knew that simply increasing internal links and adding content will improve the PR of every page, I just inter-linked all category pages and added a link to each category at the very bottom of a couple of subpages (the search engine optimization course lessons). In order to add content, I just added the information about how to exchange links with me to every category page and thatīs where I think I made a mistake.

Why, you ask ?

Two weeks ago I remembered that Google detects and neglects dublicate content. So it wonīt make a difference to add the same paragraphs of text to every page. I deleted the additional text again and waited how good my category pages will do just by inter-linking and a dozen of additional links from other PR 2-3 pages.

All pagesī PRs went from 0 to 2. Now with a PR of 2 itīs pretty much easier to get link partners than with a PR of 0.

Adding unique content to each category page

The next step now is to add unique and targeted content to each and every category page. How can I do that using the automated link page generator tool of Arelis, without having too many links going out from these pages (which would lower the PRs again) ?

1. Adding more link partners. 10 - 20 link partners per page would generate a good amount of unique targeted content, as every link partner has itīs own title and description (which makes the content of the page unique). And as every link partner fits in a certain category, the content would also be targeted, i.e. a lot of "internet marketing" keywords in the "internet marketing" category.

2. Adding your own pages as "link partners"
Now this is a pretty cool idea I havenīt seen anybody who uses Arelis implementing yet. If you just add content to the link page template, the same text would appear on all pages which means itīs not unique anymore. So in order to further increase your unique content on every category page AND keep the number of outgoing links at a minimum, you can simply link to your own pages or other domains you own and write a long description for each link.

Iīm going to implement this strategy in the coming month for more categories of my link partner directory and let you know the results then.
