issue #5 - January 2004 - How much optimization is sane for your search engine listing ?

Hello,

how are you doing - is everything alright ?

What a lovely sunny day here in Germany. Iīve just spent two hours in the backyard of our home together with my wife and our daughter Sophia taking advantage of the snow while itīs still there.

While my wife doesnīt really like the cold germany winter (itīs her first winter anyway), Sophia enjoys playing in the snow and sledging down the hills.

Today Iīm going to discuss with you "how much optimization is sane for your listing", introduce you to TheJungleMarketerīs review system, talk to you about a new small seo experiment and finally announce the two winners of a set of the brand new marketing tutorial "Marketing Quickies" (by Lee Benson and Andrew Fox).

Yes - you heard it right. Iīve just got a license to this product and looked over it these days. If youīve been a subscriber to my newsletter for a while, you know that Iīm not easily getting exited about just everything and I can honestly tell you that this tutorial is fantastic.

Lee Benson and Andrew Fox reveal most of their powerful website promotion strategies, some of the techniques are pretty unique and all of them easy and quick to apply to your business.

This week only you can have the CDs for the low price of 49 $ ( thatīs 75% off the regular price), shipping and two bonuses (over 260 $ value) included, AND you still have the chance to win the CDs, i.e. should your name come up a winner even 10 months from now, Iīll refund every penny you paid.

Ainīt that fair enough ?

Article 1

"How much optimization is sane for your listing?"

First of all: note that I didnīt say "ranking".

After Googleīs Florida update in november 2003, there has been a growing number of theories and speculations about how the new algorithm might be working.

A whole lot of people started to talk about de-optimizing webpages in order to avoid being penalized and (re-) gain a better position in Google.

I must confess that I also thought about excluding my main keyphrase from certain tags, but as my site didnīt have a good position by that time, I preferred to wait a little bit longer to see where it will go without changes.

Checking the top three results for popular keywords like "generic viagra" or "search engine optimization", I found that these sites had the keyphrase included in most of the tags (title, keyword, description, alt), so there wasnīt really any evidence for the need of de-optimization.

Well, just a few days before Christmas, TheJungleMarketer.com appeared in the top ten for my chosen keyphrase, but when I saw the description Google had chosen for my site, I couldnīt feel very exited.

Google just took the first occurrences of my keyphrase in a few alt tags and displayed something like that:

tjm-internet-marketing-ezine Archives
tjm-internet-marketing-ezine About Me
tjm-internet-marketing-ezine Sitemap

Now I realized where the limit of web page optimization for search engine rankings was. So I quickly took out these tags and made sure that the first occurrence of my chosen keyphrase was within a paragraph Iīd like to see displayed as description.

The next time Googleīs spider stopped by to look for the changes Iīve made, it brought back the new description:

... Hereīs my promise : I will never hold back any personal marketing "secret" from loyal subscribers of "The Jungle Marketerīs" internet marketing ezine .. ...

Now THATīs a description !

And the moral of this little story is:

If you optimize your pages too much, you could end up with a junky description. Check how your pages appear in the results and make the necessary changes in order to influence your siteīs listing the way YOU want it to appear.

Introducing:

TheJungleMarketerīs Reviews.

Reviews are based on my personal opinion about and experience I have or had with the services / ebooks / tools.

The first review Iīve made available is for "Google Cash". I got a little bit side-tracked in the beginning of the month, experimenting with some of the strategies in the book.

It was well worth the experience and thereīs still a lot I need to learn about Google Adwords but in the end I wasnīt really enthusiastic about the book.

A new small SEO / PR experiment:

Introduction: Itīs always the same - the first steps are the most difficults. So youīve published your new site, PR still 0, and want to get people to exchange links with you.

Unfortunately, a PR 0 site isnīt very interesting for other webmasters to exchange links, so you might need a while to get the first few linkpartners and your homepage a PR of 3.

But hey, since you have only one link pointing to your link directory index, this page still has a PR of 0 and the pages where you put the links to your partners, too.

I recognized the mistake I made when I checked my subpages for their PRs. While my homepage had a PR of 3 (now 4), most of the subpages in the archives directory had a PR of 1 (with only one link to them - but a whole lot of text and few outgoing links).

I wondered why one of my subpages got a PR of 4 right from the start and noticed that it had a lot of text AND a link back from all the 50+ "PR 1" subpages.

So the step I took was to add a link to all of these pages to my link directory main page, which is a page with very few content and a lot of links, to see how exactly it would affect its PR.

result: through internal linking only, the PR jumped to 3.

The next step now is to see how exactly will it behave when I add a few paragraphs of text to the directory main page and all other link partner subpages.

Iīll do this in the next week and hope for Google come by before the end of february so I can tell you the results.

Wishing you all the best !
